He, who sees Me in all these creatures is My beloved.“. This practical demonstration encouraged compassion for all life.
      • Drawing Devotees and Fulfilling Desires: Baba had an incredible ability to draw devotees to Shirdi, “like a sparrow, with a thread tied to its feet.” He was omniscient and knew their innermost thoughts and desires. Often, His compassion led Him to fulfill them. Examples include:
          • Knowing Lakhamichand’s taking a loan for his darshan and forgetting to buy guavas, but arranging for an old woman to sell him the fruits.
          • Knowing Damu Anna’s secret thoughts about speculative business and gently dissuading him, saving him from financial ruin. He blessed Damu Anna’s wife with four sons and four daughters, by gave her four mangoes as Prasad. This act overrode astrological predictions.
          • Fulfilling Mrs. Tendulkar’s dream of her son passing his medical examination despite unfavorable astrological predictions, emphasizing faith. He also blessed Mr. Tendulkar with a higher pension after a dream.
          • Ensuring painless death and salvation (Sadgati) for devotees like Sannyasi Vijayanand, Balaram Mankar, and Tatya Noolkar; Even showering flowers on Megha’s body and arranging his funeral rites after his passing shows, deep affection.
        • Compassion for Animals: Baba displayed immense compassion for animals.
          • Notably, he bought two goats for an exorbitant sum. He explained their past lives and their enmity in their previous human forms. Out of pity, he fed them.
          • He also taught not to kill creatures, stating “God lives in all beings and creatures”.
        • Personal Sacrifice for Devotees:
          • A supreme act of compassion was when Baba
          • sacrificed His own life to save Tatya Kote Patil’s life, fulfilling an earlier prophecy that Tatya would pass away, but Baba took his place.

        Shirdi’s Shri Sai Baba exemplified unparalleled compassion and selflessness through numerous acts. He protected villagers from epidemics, encouraged disciples, healed ailments without medicine, and accepted sincere offerings. Baba’s teachings emphasized seeing God in all beings, fulfilling devotees’ desires, and displaying profound love for both people and animals, often embodying true sacrificial spirit.

        Baba is a Scientist in Optometry and Pharmacognosy

        Optometry involves examining the eyes and related structures for defects and abnormalities. Pharmacognosy is study of crude drugs obtained from medicinal plants, animals, fungi and natural sources.

        Baba started practicing medicine in the village, examined patients and gave medicines. He was always successful, and He became famous as a Hakim (Doctor). A curious case may be narrated, about His knowledge of solving Eye problem with medicinal plants, here.

        One devotee got his eye balls quite red and swollen. No Doctor was available in Shirdi. The other devotees took him to Baba. Other Doctors would use ointments, Anjans, cow’s milk and camphorated drugs etc., in such cases.

        Baba’s remedy was quite unique. He pounded some ‘Beeba’ (Some Carpus Ana Cardium i.e. marking nuts) and made two balls of them, thrust them over each eye of the patient and wrapped a cloth-bandage round them (eyes). Next day, the bandage was removed and water was poured over them.

        The inflammation subsided and the pupils became white and clear. Though the eyes are very delicate, the Beeba caused no hurt, but removed the disease of the eyes. Many such cases were cured, this is only one instances in this regard.

      • Earlier Years at Shirdi IV- Cure Ailments & His Garden

        At times when he was not absorbed in contemplation, he went about meeting people and noting their ailments. He picked up herbs or got cheap drugs from shops and with their use cured the villagers of their bodily illness.

        His knowledge of medicine and surgery appears to have been extraordinary for he cured not merely snake bite but also leprosy with snake venom and rotting eyes with Bibba. He never accepted any payment for his medical or other services. He also rendered other kinds of services.

        He ploughed up the village common land, the very land on which his Samadhi Mandir now stands, and raised a flower garden thereon. He watered the plants, carrying pots full of water on his own shoulders. He distributed the flowers and leaves freely to various Hindu temples and to Muslim holy places and

        never made any invidious distinction between Hindu and Muslim places of worship. From his supreme realised state, differences of caste, creed, position and learning, were non-existent or meaningless. This is all the history of the early years of Baba.

        1. When N.G.C. was transferred to Pandharpur and was approaching Shirdi to take leave of Baba, Baba addressed the devotees present and said to Mahalsapathy, Kasiram and Appa Scindhe:- “Let us four do Bhajan; The door of Pandari is wide open. Let us joyously do Bhajan.” Then Baba led with the song:

        To Pand’ri will I wend my way,

        Therein to be staying.

        To stay there. 0, therein to stay

        For there my Lord is living.”

        1. Joshi, younger brother of the Thana pleader Joshi, wanted to go to Baba Shirdi; but could not afford it. Some days later a Konkanath Brahmin was taking leave of Baba to go to Bombay.

        Baba (to K.B.): “Take this packet of Udhi and give it to a man, who will meet you in the train and ask you for just a span of space to sit.”

        K.B. (receiving it):If I do not find any man, I will send this packet back to you.

        B. “You will find the man.”

        Then K. B started from Kopergaon to Bombay and up to Kalyan found no one. At Kalyan the whole train and his compartment were overcrowded and Joshi, the younger rushed into his compartment and asked for a span of space. K.B. gave him the space and also the Udhi.

        555.   On the 3rd week of October 1917 at 5 p.m. Kaka at his office met the son of his master, the sait.

        • S.: My father writes from Nasik and wants to know, if Sai Baba would advise him to prolong his stay there or go back to Bombay. Please go to Shirdi and consult Baba.

        KM:. H.S.Dixit is at Shirdi, we shall write to him to consult Baba and get his orders.

        S.S. No, no. The sait is particular that you should go and get orders direct from Baba.

        KM: I will go.

        At that same time Baba was at the mosque with H.S.D. and 24 others.

        Baba turning to H.S.D.: “Hallo! that matters are being bruited and what deliberation!”

        Next day K.M. arrived at Shirdi.

        Baba to K.M: “You have done well in coming.”

        Baba (turning to H.S.D.): “Last evening we were thinking of this. Were we not? “

        Then K.M. and H.S.D. compared notes and found how Baba was watching devotees both at Bombay and at Shirdi at the same time, (cf.para 9)

        (d) Rao Bahadur M.W. Pradhan’s mother

        556. Baba to M.W. Pradhan: “On this side of my body there is excruciating pain. It will be alright in two or four days.”

        Baba, when saying this, was apparently healthy and M.W.P. could not make out its meaning at the time; but when he went home to Bombay, he found that his (M.W.P’s) mother’s body on one side (by reason of hemiplegia) had excruciating pain and it was alright in two or four days.

        (e) Manager’s servant

        557. Baba before Mr.Manager (Sadashiv Tarkhad): “My leg is paining. It will be alright. if Korphad (aloe) is spilt in two, warmed over a fire and applied. “

        It was Manager’s servant that had pain (lumbago) and the suggested application of Korphad was adopted and the servant was cured
